Fry Instant Phrases are groups of words that come from Dr. Edward Fry’s Instant Word List, which includes the most commonly used words in the English language. The first 300 words in the list are especially important, as they make up about 67% of the words that students typically encounter in their reading. By learning and practicing these phrases, students can improve their reading fluency and comprehension.
What are the benefits of using Fry Instant Phrases in your class?
Fry Instant Phrases can help children recognize common words and develop their reading fluency.
The Fry Instant Phrases consist of a set of 600 phrases with sight words that teachers use in a sequence. Each set of phrases builds on the previous set, with the aim of helping children gradually develop their reading skills.
The phrases are arranged according to their level of difficulty. The easiest phrases appearing first and the more challenging phrases appearing later. In kindergarten, children are typically introduced to the first 100 Fry Instant Phrases. These phrases include common words such as “a,” “the,” and
“I.”
With progress through kindergarten and into first grade, they are introduced to additional phrases, including those that include sight words such as “because” and “different.”

By the time children reach the second grade, they are expected to have a strong grasp of the Fry Instant Phrases. At this level, children are introduced to more complex phrases, including those that include multiple clauses and phrases that are more abstract in nature.
