Decodables Passages. How I use it in my Classroom.
On Mondays, I have each student read Decodable Passages as a cold read to me. I try to have students read the entire passage, but will also just have them read for one minute. This does take some time to implement. To help make this easier, I start pulling students to do their cold reading as soon as they start coming into the room. The other students begin their daily routines while I pull students one at a time to read. Keep this data as a way to show students’ growth. It also helps with monitoring what errors students are making (such as decoding or high-frequency word mistakes).
I like to set goals with my students. This is an easy way to get students to buy into practicing their fluency. It’s also easy to differentiate for each student. On Fridays, I have students read to me again and compare their progress. In my class, students who achieve their objectives receive a positive reward. The decodable passages I use in my classroom are differentiated. Pictures that I include on a page are only to entertain

Remember that Decodable Passages are a valuable tool in your toolbox, but they’re not the only tool. And if you’re new to the Science of Reading (SOR), you may be staring at your bookshelves filled with leveled readers and wondering what to do next.
If you’re interested in learning about using decodable AND leveled readers appropriately, watch this informative webinar. Be assured, there is a place for both types of texts within your classroom for your students!
